The rap game’s favorite son Chance The Rapper visited Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America” Monday (Aug. 15) to perform his song “Summer Friends” and to chat about his whirlwind year as an artist.
In a pre-recorded clip before the live interview and performance, the 23-year-old discussed the importance of his relationship with God in his music, which he believes gives him freedom.
“I think there’s a lot of taboos in hip-hop that people try and stay away from,” the Chi-town MC said. “I think a big one is: people are afraid to speak about God to a certain extent and I think if you’re not free to speak about God then you’re not free.”
The freedom that this musician feels certainly translates over to success. Chance’s universally-acclaimed mixtape Coloring Book became the first streaming-only body of music to chart on the Billboard 200, a feat which may have prompted the Recording Academy to consider streaming-only artists for Grammy award consideration soon after its release.
